In February, a roofing contractor who stole ‘Thousands of pounds,’ from senior citizens has received a prison term up to a year, following on from an inquiry led by Trading Standards.

39-year-old Robert Macintyre was sent to prison after the Trading Standards department of Lancashire County Council considered the labour as substandard and deceitful.

Preston Crown Court witnessed Macintyre accept responsibility for his actions, receiving a prison term for breaching the ‘Fraud Act 2006,’ and ‘The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.’

The decision was made after an inquiry regarding some addresses in the same area from 2021 to 2024.

Trading Standards revealed that Macintyre’s services were unsatisfactory and unclear.

Macintyre deceived customers, as he misused the accreditations of The British Board of Agreement, Velux, and City & Guilds.

Homeowners remained in a very vulnerable positions, coming to terms with either settling their utilities, or having their roofs reattended to.

Councillor Joshua Roberts stated the following: “Our Trading Standards team works tirelessly to bring rogue traders to justice.” “By scamming vulnerable residents out of thousands of pounds, they cause mental anguish to their victims and families.”

“Robert Macintyre carried out poor quality work for elderly residents for which he overcharged, but thanks to the efforts of our Trading Standards officers, he’s now behind bars.”

“This prosecution sends a clear signal that we won’t tolerate rogue traders in Lancashire, and we’ll do everything we can to bring them to justice.”

The Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC) have an array of members throughout the UK, especially those based in Lancashire.

As a reminder for homeowners, if you have 25% or more of your roof quoted for, it is a legal requirement for yourself to speak to your local council and inform building control being completed.

This is because if you were to sell your property, and building control weren’t informed of the works being completed, they wouldn’t be able to sign the works off.

This means that potentially, you would be unable to sell your property.

Replacing or repairing a roof is a significant project, making the choice of contractor highly important.
