In October, it was revealed that 2 building firms were charged over £95,000, following on from a labourer taking a fall through the roofing system of an industrial property, with his leg being pierced on impact.
A gentleman was carrying out some works on a roofing system belonging to Cirteq Ltd at Keighley, West Yorkshire on July 8th 2022.
They severely damaged their leg, with the injuries being placed at “Serious risk,” from A.T. Lee Properties Limited and LJH Property Limited, with each firm taking accountability of breaking the Health and Safety at Work Act, and received a financial penalty from Leeds Magistrates’ Court on October 1st earlier this year.
A.T. Lee Properties Limited was requested to settle a total of £47,783, from breaking Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Neil Cryer, the business owner was handed a ‘Two-year conditional discharge,’ and requested to settle £2,639, following on from breaking Section 37(1) of the same legislation.
Whereas LJH Property Limited was requested to settle a total of £47,818, for also breaking Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
Luke Hudson, the business owner, accepted responsibility and also received a ‘Two-year conditional discharge,’ along with a request to settle £2,639.
The HSE revealed that the victim was attended to an ‘Existing asbestos cement roof.’
Their inquiry revealed that the labour was unorganized, with both firms being unable to implement health and safety measures.
The HSE stated the following: “People working on the roof and those working below within the factory were placed at serious risk.”
“Work at height continues to be the leading cause of workplace fatalities, and had this work been planned, managed, and monitored to a sufficient standard by all parties involved, this incident should not have occurred.”
