Earlier this year, the National Slate Museum who has always been very complimentary on slate from Wales was a fitted with a new roofing system. The system will consist of metal, with many questioning the scarcity of slate, especially with Cyngor Gwynedd Council authorising for such labour to go ahead.
The site is situated at an area of UNESCO World Heritage. Applications were previously made by Amgueddfa Cymru (Museum Cymru), discussing the changes.
Towards the end of 2024, the closing of the site allowed the project of £21 million to go ahead. This consisted of modifications inside & outside of the build.
The area dates back to the 1800’s, with an array of the country’s most intact constructions. The plan discussed the original structure to one of the builds, with the planned construction to look very different.
It is believed the construction “Will have GRC cladding, namely reinforced concrete panels, coloured red with a grey metal roof.” “The windows and doors would also be in metal.” “Opposite the shop it is proposed to erect a new canopy that would function as a shelter for visitors.” “It will be in a square shape with a roof of red corrugated sheeting and the sides would all be open.”
Additionally, it was mentioned that the construction was “Designed carefully.”
The council stated the following: “The proposal creates a healthy and vibrant environment and improves the visitor experience; it will lead to more visitors coming to the site in the future.” “The restoration and alterations are essential and acceptable.” “I’m feeling slightly awkward, there is no roofing of local Welsh slate on the shop and shelter.”
“After all, the buildings world-wide were roofed by slate from here so I am wondering why they didn’t choose slate?”
“Please, we ask that they should keep the character of the buildings as they have been in the past.”
